You Are a Disgrace, Okogie Tells N/Assembly

The catholic Archbishop of Lagos , his Eminence Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie has lashed out at the National Assembly describing them as a shame to the country He wondered why the national law makers should abdicate in their responsibility of providing good governance just for pecuniary benefit .

Okogie made this remarks while fielding questions from the Niger delta standard in his office at the weekend "I am ashamed of our legislators , these are the people who are suppose to direct the nation as it is done in other part of the world ,so what is wrong with our own legislators ,the head of state is seen as the father of the nation ,he can be likened to a father of a home who is sick ,does it mean the children will go hungry just because the father is sick automatically the wife takes over ,this man has a vice president who is seen as his wife so what stops the vice taking over until he finally recovers "

He accused some elements in the kitchen cabinet of being the brain behind the state of confusion enveloping the nation for fear that they might loose out in the event of the vice president coming in the acting capacity "some people feel that if this man takes over it will deny them of their chance and that is what is happening, must you rule by force " he asked

The revered Bishop who just came back from oversea trip narrated a gory experience in the hand of immigration officials in Europe where he was subjected to all sorts of embarrassment just for being a Nigerian "they frisked me from head to toe with all electronic gadget and body scanning machine "..

Reps query Okiro over N1.2b fee

The House of Representatives yesterday queried Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro for paying N1.2 billion to a consultant for technology-aided recruitment services provided to the Police.

The House recently passed a resolution condeming the online recruitment on the ground that many Nigerians were been shortchanged. Okiro was queried over proceeds made from the N2,000 application fee charged each applicant for the exeercise, which totalled N1.2 billion.

Following a resolution of the House last week directing the Police to complement the online recruitment with the distribution of hard copies of application forms through its various commands, the IG was summoned by the House Committee on Police Affairs to explain the level of compliance with the resolution.

The IG, however, told the members of the House the Police has a sharing arrangement of 60:40 of the proceeds of the exercise in favour of the consultant handling the project.

But Deputy Speaker, Usman Nafada who attended the meeting essentailly because of police disregard for its resolution told the IG that he had his reservations for that aspect of the deal. According to him, there was no justification for that kind of negotiation that would put the Police at a gross disadvantage...

Horror in Ogoniland...Man and pregnant wife found dead mysteriously

Ogoni was in tears on Saturday, January 23, as what appears to be a mystery death struck the sleazy community of Khana. It was the death of a couple whose love tango came to abrupt end by a yet to be identified cause. It was Mr. John Joshua, a very skilled motor mechanic, an indigene of Kwaa Kwaa village, Kono Boue in Khana LGA of Rivers State and his pregnant wife.

The drama of death started to play out shortly after the young man closed from work for the day; he decided to go ahead with his plan travelled home despite the advice of the landlord of his workshop to shelve the trip. He proceeded on the trip and never came back to Port Harcourt, to his wife and to his job.

He was found dead the following day in one of the rooms he had prepared in his newly built 7-bedroom bungalow which was yet to be fully completed. A lady, Mtonee- Bari Sikom from Zaagbon village, who was heavily pregnant for him, and to whom he was engaged to be married as a second wife, was also found dead alongside him

What could have caused the death of the man and woman? According to the deceased man's wife of 10 years, Love John Joshua, who resided with him in Port Harcourt, John had informed her of his intension to travel home after work on the fateful day. He left from the workshop and Rev Mission Teelonyie, a Methodist clergy and married to John's sister took it from there.

According to him, no member of the family had any knowledge that John had come in that night as his yet to be fully completed house was a little away from the main family settlement. The reverend gentleman said that he was in a meeting in church when he received a call that his brother in-law was dead and had to leave the meeting where he met the unfortunate scene.

He said he asked the bodies to be removed after reporting the incident to the police. Niger Delta STANDARD went to Zaagbon, the village of the late woman, which is about six km from the village of the man, where we spoke with Zorbari Sikom, the sister of the late woman. She recounted the events of the fateful day.

According to her, John usually came to pick her late sister to his village or he would sleep with them at their place. On the fateful day, he had called her late sister very late in the evening at about 9pm and asked her to come over to his village because the new generator he had just bought and was taking to his house in the village would make it difficult for him to come...

Arsenal have become too easy to beat, says Michael Ballack

Michael Ballack today urged Arsene Wenger to stop making excuses and accept that his Arsenal team have become too predictable.

The pressure is building on the Gunners boss with his side now nine points behind Chelsea after their 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

Arsenal face Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday in a game they must win to retain any chance of securing their first Premier League title since 2004.

Wenger claimed after yesterday's defeat that his team deserved to win and said: “We were still a bit uncertain at the start of the game but when we went into it we were completely dominant.”

He also believed his young Gunners were the victims of persistent fouling in midfield and even heaped some of the blame for losing on the Chelsea fans in the Matthew Harding stand who refused to give keeper Manuel Almunia the ball back as time ran out at the end of the match.

He added: “They make the foul at the right time when they are caught on the counter-attack, the little push with the shirt and it is not enough to get a yellow card. They have the tricks of a very experienced team and they do that very well.”..

There’s clearly a problem between Arshavin and his team-mates

Let’s not make any bones about this. We dominated possession against Chelsea, of course we did. But how many saves (and I mean proper saves) did Cech make? The only ones I can think of are from Arshavin in the first-half, and the Fabregas free-kick in the second.

The fact is that Chelsea allowed us to have that possession, safe in the knowledge that we would get 25 yards from their goal and start going sideways. Even when Bendtner came on, did you see us put even one ball in the air for him to attack? No tactics and no ability to defend.

Arshavin: RVP problem?

When I saw the team selection before the game I thought to myself, "I don’t believe it", but then I realised I could, absolutely, believe it as our team is selected by Arsene Wenger, a man who has become so arrogant and stubborn in his beliefs that he is now working to the detriment of Arsenal. It is the most terrible shame that he is rapidly becoming his own nemesis, by his failure to see what is so obviously wrong in his team.

It was bad enough to go in against Man Utd last week with the same short-arse type of front man that had faced Chelsea in November – to do it against Chelsea again is criminal. Last week, before the game, Wenger announced on the big screen that they were having to be cautious with Nicklas Bendtner (who is not the answer by the way) as he was not yet properly fit – this is unacceptable when the boy has been out since October, and you have had a whole month to buy someone who is fit.

I’d like to go through the starting line-up from the Chelsea game to illustrate what I am talking about.

Let’s start with the goalkeeper. If the rumours are to be believed, Wenger tried to sign Sorensen from Stoke at the last minute on Monday. Leaving aside the folly of leaving it so late, this would indicate that Wenger has lost faith in Manuel Almunia – the rest of us had that pleasure five years ago.

However, having lost faith, we see Almunia selected again at Chelsea. Given that Wenger tried to replace him last week, what does that say about Fabianski and Mannone? Why were the pair given new contracts if, when Almunia has surely reached the end of the line, they still can’t usurp him? Why was Wenger allowed to give them new contracts if he has no intention of letting them stake their claim? After the treatment Jens Lehmann received from Wenger (a move that I will always maintain cost us the title in 2008) how the hell is it that Almunia still playing?

Then there are the full-backs. Two players who cannot do the most basic of defensive tasks. Constantly out of position, never able to get tight enough to prevent balls into the box. Clichy, in particular, is still making the same mistakes he was four years ago. The less said about the pair of them in attacking areas the better. Song may have let Drogba run away from him for the first goal, but where was Clichy going as the corner was taken? He was on that post and walked over to hold hands with Sagna. Traore is no worse defensively than Clichy, and certainly is better in attacking areas – his crosses actually make it into the danger area for God’s sake. I’d rather see Eboue at right-back, any day.

Malouda backing Chelsea pal Drogba over Barcelona blow-up

Florent Malouda says Chelsea's players are on a mission this season to win trophies.

The France winger admits they're still smarting over the way they were dumped out of last season's Champions League.

Malouda understood Didier Drogba’s reaction after their semifinal defeat by Barcelona.

He told the Telegraph: “A lot of people are watching on TV and they will say it’s not a good example for kids but he’s a human being. He had all this adrenalin because we’ve been training from the beginning of the season to win this trophy.

"The main thing is that he apologised. But I understand him. It’s really difficult to accept. But the reaction was good. We have leaders and that’s the difference when you come to moments of high pressure.’’
